America's Semiquincentennial

250 Years of Bold Flavors
& Bolder Independence

On July 4th, 1776, thirteen colonies declared something remarkable: that they would chart their own course - their own culture, their own identity, and yes, their own cuisine. eat2explore is celebrating America's 250th birthday the tastiest way we know how: by exploring both sides of the Atlantic.

Our Explore USA Box captures the spirit, geography, and bold diversity of American cooking. Our Explore United Kingdom Box pays delicious homage to the mother country we respectfully - but firmly - said goodbye to. Together, they tell the full story.

5 Fun Facts About America's Independence

History is always tastier with a side of trivia.

🖊️  The Declaration Wasn't Signed on July 4th

Most delegates actually signed the Declaration of Independence on August 2, 1776 - not July 4th! The Fourth marks when Congress approved the final text, but the big signing party came weeks later.

🍵  Tea Wasn't Thrown Away — It Was a Statement

In 1773, colonists dressed as Mohawk warriors dumped 342 chests of British tea into Boston Harbor - worth about $1.7 million today. The ultimate "no thanks" to a cup of Earl Grey.

🦅  Ben Franklin Wanted the Turkey, Not the Eagle

Benjamin Franklin reportedly argued that the wild turkey was a more respectable bird than the bald eagle for the national symbol. Thankfully, he was outvoted - though Thanksgiving still vindicates him annually.

📜  Two Presidents Died on July 4th, 1826

John Adams and Thomas Jefferson - both Founding Fathers who signed the Declaration - died on the exact same day: July 4th, 1826. Exactly 50 years to the day after independence. Spooky, right?

🎇  America's First Fireworks Were on July 4th, 1777

Philadelphia celebrated the very first Independence Day anniversary with fireworks, bonfires, and a 13-cannon salute in 1777 - while the Revolutionary War was still being fought. Americans have never needed an excuse to throw a party.
