Popular throughout Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary, these cookies are a popular Christmas favorite, Vanillekipferl originated in Austria around 400 years ago when, in celebration of a victory over the Ottoman Turks, the locals created this pastry in the shape of the crescent moon (“kipferl”) found on the Turkish banner.
Nutella-Plätzchen (Nutella Cookies)
Nutella-Plätzchen is a German term for Nutella cookies. These are cookies made with Nutella, a popular chocolate hazelnut spread. These Nutella cookies are easy to make and kids will have fun rolling the dough and pressing their little fingers in the middle to create a well in the dough.
Zimtsterne (Cinnamon Stars)
Zimtsterne (pronounced "tsimt-shtern-uh"), also known as cinnamon stars, is a traditional Christmas cookie popular in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. “zimt” is cinnamon, and “sterne” is stars, in German. They are made almost entirely of ground nuts with no wheat flour – traditionally almonds but it is sometimes combined with hazelnuts. Believed to originate sometime around the 1600s, Zimtsterne were a food for royalty since cinnamon was a very expensive and rare spice in Europe that time and had to be imported.
