Get to know Ukraine

A taste of the culture, geography, and history packed into this month's 16-page Explorer Booklet.

Ukraine is the second-largest country in Europe. Located in Eastern Europe, it borders seven countries and stretches across fertile plains, rolling hills, and mountain regions.

St. Sophia Cathedral
Located in Kyiv, St. Sophia Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in the 11th century and known for its beautiful mosaics and frescoes.

Ukraine is known as the “Breadbasket of Europe.” Around two-thirds of its land is covered in rich black soil, making the country especially well suited for growing wheat and many other crops.

Golden Gate of Kyiv
Built in the 11th century, the Golden Gate of Kyiv is one of the few surviving examples of medieval fortifications in Europe.

Sunflowers are an important symbol and crop of Ukraine. The booklet notes that Ukraine is the world’s largest exporter of sunflower oil, supplying about half of global exports, and is also a major exporter of sunflower seeds.

Arsenalna Metro Station

Kyiv’s Arsenalna Metro Station is the world’s deepest metro station, descending 346 feet (105.5 meters) underground.

Ukrainian culture is rich in traditional folk art. Pysanky decorated eggs, colorful Petrykivka painting, embroidered vyshyvanka shirts, and woven Hutsul blankets all reflect regional traditions passed down through generations.
