Gaeng Keow Wan (Green curry)

One of Thailand's most beloved curries, built on a fragrant base of coconut milk, garlic, shallots, and lemongrass, with green chilies giving the dish its signature color and a milder, sweeter heat than other Thai curries.

Did you know? Green curry was invented during the reign of King Rama VI or VII, sometime between 1908 and 1926.

Khao Pad Poo (Thai fried rice)

A beloved Thai street food classic, this one-pan dish stir-fries jasmine rice with crab (or chicken), egg, and vegetables, finished with a splash of fish sauce for a dish that's quick, comforting, and full of flavor.

Larb Moo (Thai larb)

A popular minced meat salad from Laos and Northeast Thailand, tossed with lemongrass, lime, fish sauce, cilantro, and mint, then served in lettuce cups with toasted rice powder and pickled carrots for a bright, herbaceous bite.

Get to know Thailand

A taste of the culture, geography, and history packed into this month's 16-page Explorer Booklet.

Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never colonized by a European power. Its name literally means "land of the free," and its landscape stretches from sandy southern coastlines to fertile rice paddies, rolling hills, and mountains in the north.

Chiang Mai's Old City
Founded in 1296 as the capital of the ancient Lanna Kingdom, this walled and moated old city in northern Thailand is home to more than 30 temples showcasing Lanna, Sri Lankan, Burmese, and Mon architectural styles.

Thailand is one of the world's largest exporters of orchids, home to approximately 1,300 native orchid species — a fitting symbol for a country as vibrant and varied as its cuisine.

Grand Palace
Located in Bangkok, the Grand Palace has served as the official residence of the Kings of Siam (and later Thailand) since 1782. Though the King no longer resides there, it's still used for official events and royal ceremonies.

The bumblebee bat, found in Thailand, is considered the world's smallest mammal, weighing just about 2 grams.

Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn)
This mysterious prehistoric monument in Wiltshire is made up of a ring of enormous standing stones believed to have been erected around 2500 BC.

Traditionally, Thai people built their houses on high stilts — both to stay above the water during floods and to stay safe from dangerous animals below.
