Get to know Mexico

A taste of the culture, geography, and history packed into this month's 16-page Explorer Booklet.

Mexico is the birthplace of chocolate. Ancient Mesoamerican civilizations, like the Mayans and Aztecs, were among the first to cultivate cacao and create chocolate beverages.

Olmec Colossal Head
The Olmec were the earliest known major civilization to inhabit Mexico. Their massive carved stone heads remain one of the most recognizable legacies of ancient Mesoamerica.

Mexico is home to 35 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the ancient Mayan city of Chichén Itzá and the pre-Hispanic city of Teotihuacán.

Parícutin, the "Surprise Volcano"

In 1943, a volcano suddenly began rising from a farmer's cornfield. It grew for nine years, eventually reaching about 1,300 feet before becoming dormant.

Every year, tens of millions of Monarch butterflies migrate from as far as Canada to winter in Mexico's fir forests - the round trip takes about 8 months.

Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve
Each winter, millions of monarch butterflies migrate to the fir forests of central Mexico. So many gather that their wings turn tree trunks orange and their weight can bend the branches.

Mexico sits along the world's most active earthquake zone, known as the Ring of Fire.
