Shawarma

A Middle Eastern classic of thinly sliced, marinated beef, chicken, or mushrooms, broiled until golden and piled into warm pita with pickled onion, tomatoes, cucumber, and a creamy tahini-based tarator sauce.

Title

Did you know? The word "cloves" comes from the Latin "clavus," meaning "nail" — a nod to the spice's nail-like shape.

Kousa Mahshi (Stuffed Zucchini)

A beloved Lebanese summer dish of zucchini halves filled with a spiced meat (or chickpea) and rice mixture, then braised in a rich tomato sauce for a comforting, veggie-forward meal that's as fun to make as it is to eat.

Title

Did you know? Zucchini is technically a fruit, though it's cooked and eaten like a vegetable.

Kafta Meatballs

Lebanon meatballs, made with ground beef and/or lamb, aromatic spices, parsley, and onion, then paired with sumac yogurt sauce, grilled vegetables, and buttery orzo for a dish that balances Lebanese street food with home-cooked comfort.

Did you know? Sumac's tangy, lemon-like flavor comes from the dried, ground berries of the Rhus plant, native to the Mediterranean and Middle East.

Get to know Lebanon

A taste of the culture, geography, and history packed into this month's 16-page Explorer Booklet.

Lebanon has the most religiously diverse society in the Middle East. Its unique cultural history comes from the many foreign rulers who occupied the country over the centuries, including the Roman Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and France.

Jeita Grotto

Located in the Nahr al-Kalb valley at about 300 meters above sea level, this compound of crystalline limestone caves features a lower section explored by boat along an underground river, and an upper section filled with dramatic stalactites and stalagmites.

Lebanon is the only Middle Eastern country that does not have a desert — its landscape ranges from a Mediterranean coastline to snow-capped mountains and the fertile Beqaa Valley.

Byblos

Known as Jbeil in Arabic, Byblos is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, known for its ancient port, Phoenician ruins, Crusader castle, and historic old souk. It's believed to be the birthplace of the Phoenician alphabet, the precursor to modern alphabets.

The name "Lebanon" is among the world's oldest continuously used country names, appearing in texts as far back as around 3000 BCE — over 5,000 years ago.

Baalbek
Located in the Beqaa Valley, this UNESCO World Heritage site is home to some of the best-preserved Roman ruins in the world, including the massive Temple of Jupiter and the Temple of Bacchus. The site has been a center of worship for over 2,000 years.

Lebanese art dates back to 1500 BC, blending Egyptian, French, Arab, and Italian influences into a tradition of sculpture, paintings, and bronze and terracotta figurines, with both Christian and Muslim designs represented.
